Free tool

Transcribe a voice memo to text — free.

Upload a voice memo or record right here, and get an accurate transcript in seconds. Up to 5 minutes of audio, no sign-up, and your recording is never stored.

How it works

  1. 1. Add your audio. Upload an m4a, mp3, wav, webm, or ogg file (up to 10 MB and 5 minutes), or record directly in your browser.
  2. 2. We transcribe it. State-of-the-art AI speech recognition turns your recording into text, with automatic language detection.
  3. 3. Copy your transcript. Copy the text or download it as a file. Your audio is processed in memory and never stored.

What if you could ask your voice notes anything?

Transcribing one memo is handy. Chronicle goes further: record voice notes on your phone, and every one is transcribed, organized, and searchable automatically. Ask “what did I say about the kitchen renovation?” and get the answer — with the original recording as proof.

Frequently asked questions

Is this voice memo transcription tool really free?
Yes. You can transcribe up to 5 recordings per hour, each up to 5 minutes long, completely free and without creating an account. If you record voice notes regularly, the Chronicle app transcribes them automatically and makes everything searchable.
Which audio formats can I transcribe?
You can upload m4a and mp4 (Apple Voice Memos), mp3, wav, webm, and ogg files up to 10 MB, or record directly in your browser. Recordings are limited to 5 minutes.
What happens to my audio after transcription?
Your audio is processed in memory to produce the transcript and is not stored on our servers. The transcript is only shown to you in your browser.
How do I transcribe an Apple Voice Memo from my iPhone?
In the Voice Memos app, tap the recording, tap the share icon, and save or send the .m4a file to yourself. Then upload it here to get the transcript. Or skip the export entirely: record in the Chronicle app and every voice note is transcribed automatically.
Which languages are supported?
Transcription works in dozens of languages — including English, Spanish, Portuguese, French, and German — and detects the spoken language automatically.
